Motorcycles:
A rider needs to know how to turn correctly when riding. Not to turn correctly can lead to a sure crash. Taking a turn to wide can run you right off the road or lead to hard braking.
Many have spoken of Counter Steering” or Push Steering” but what does this mean? This means pushing the handlebars in the opposite direction of the turn so that you properly lean in the turn and make a sharper turn.
Some people have trouble with this technique, some riders are scared to try it and other just have never learned the proper way to do it.
When you want to lean the bike at faster speeds, you can do many different actions, however counter steering is one of the most important parts of the turn.
Another important part is looking through the turn (keeping your attention focused at the end of the turn, rather than right in front of you pin-pointing” where you want to go.
Both of these should be practiced until one has it down. Practicing it could be called drilling” it. One should drill these techniques to perfection, a dirt bike is a great way to practice these. You can get some cones and a flat area and try them out. Or try these in a parking lot without any traffic or cars. Be careful and make sure you are going faster than 20 MPH before counter steering!
A motorcycle has a gyroscopic quality. A gyroscope is a wheel on a circle that spins and holds itself in one spot – as long as the wheel is spinning – it stays up. Motorcycles are the same way, they like to stand straight up when the wheels are rotating.
What is Counter Steering”? You push the steering wheel in the opposite direction thus allowing the bike to lean over more so you can make a tighter turn. The trick to this is to constantly look toward the end of the turn.
When you look through the turn” you make the whole steering job easier.
If you are concerned with pushing too hard in the wrong direction or crashing, realize that with counter steering while you are moving, you lean too far before you pushed to much meaning that the more you push the more you lean and you would have to push quite hard to cause your tires to run out of traction, with modern motorcycles, pegs would get in the way in leaning long before you would push too hard. It is just a skill that you have to try. Even if yoru pegs scrape the ground the bike has a tendency to pull itself straight up again on the traction.
Motorcycle racers do this all the time. And notice that they look through the turn instead a few feet in front of them.
So here is the Summary:
1. You must be going faster than 20 MPH to properly counter steer.
2. Motorcycles are extremely stable. They are manufactured with perfect weight ratio and they prefer to stand straight up just like a gyroscope.
3. To counter steer, push the way you want to turn. Push right to go right, push left to turn to the left.
4. It is harder to lean the bike than it is to pull the bike back up.
Turning a car:
It might surprise to see that when you turn your car, your front wheels are not pointing in the same direction. For a car to turn properly, each wheel must follow a different circle. Each wheel follows its own path, the inside wheel follows a smaller radius. And each wheel will connect at the center of the turn.
It's a bit complicated, however the thing to know is that there are several different types of steering gears, The most common are rack-and-pinion and recirculating-ball. Recirculating-ball steering is used on many trucks and SUV's today.
When driving a car, you should also look through the turn and predict where you want to go…
